Hand study: the 25% threshold against a half-pot Flop bet

Break-even call equity

Enter the pot after the opponent’s wager but before your call, then enter the call amount.

Break-even equity25.0%50 ÷ (150 + 50)

The spot

The pot is 100 chips. The opponent bets 50. Before you act, the pot is therefore 150 and the call costs 50.

If you call, the final pot before any future action is 200. You risk 50 to contest the 150 already available.

The break-even calculation

Break-even equity = 50 ÷ (150 + 50) = 25%. Winning more than one quarter of the final no-future-action outcomes makes the call positive before rake; winning less makes it negative.

This is an exact arithmetic statement, not an estimate of any particular hand’s equity.

Why a solver can still choose differently

Future Turn and River betting, position, range realization, raise options, rake, and fold equity can all change the action value.

Use 25% as a diagnostic threshold, then compare it with card-aware equity and the declared strategy model.

FAQ

Questions this page should not hide

Why is the denominator 200?

The pot before calling is 150 and your call adds 50, so the amount contested after calling is 200.

Do I include my opponent’s 50 twice?

No. It is already included in the 150 pot before your call.

Does 25% mean I should always call?

No. It is only the no-future-action, no-rake showdown threshold.
